You are talking about the flushing associated with alcohol that has a high incidence in Asians and Pacific Islanders! The reason this happens is related to the metabolism of alcohol by the liver! Alcohol is metabolized by an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase which produces substances called aldehydes! The aldehydes are then normally metabolized further by an enzyme called aldehyde dehydrogenase! In a high percentage of Asians, this aldehyde dehydrogenase enzyme is missing due to missing the gene for it! So when alcohol is metabolizing in the body, some people accumulate a bunch of aldehydes that cannot be metabolized immediately! These aldehydes cause the flushing, redness, and nausea! It use to be thought that this problem wasnt necessarily dangerous, it just made it more uncomfortable for those that had it to drink alcohol! But recent information has shown that for people who are missing the enzyme, they may be more at risk for developing alcohol-related esophageal cancer! This is only if they drink a lot, though!
