To replace an electrical outlet, turn off the electric circuit going to that room. Take out the cover that goes over the outlet. Unscrew the outlet out of the wall. Unscrew the wires out of the back of the electrical outlet, and take them out. Put the wires in the new electrical outlet and screw them in. Screw the electrical outlet back to the wall. Place the cover back over the outlet. Turn the circuit back on.

    I am replacing a 120 V electrical outlet that is right next to my sink because it is not GFCI. Before I buy the GFCI, I need to know whether it should be a 15 or 20 amp outlet. I don’t want to put in the wrong type of outlet and mess something up. How do I figure out which type I need?

    Do they make outlets without the brackets? Or can I just buy a regular outlet and cut the brackets off?
