Prunus virginiana, or chokecherries, are a species of bird cherry found in North America. Chokecherries grow on small shrubs or trees averaging about 5 meters in height. They are about 1 centimeter in diameter and can range from bright red to black in color. The test is very sour, therefore most people do not eat fresh chokecherries, but choose to use them to make jellies or wines. Chokecherries are also toxic to horses.

    The locals didn’t seem to know but would say that they had heard the berries were poisonous. The berries grew in small clusters and more resembled a small cherry when unripe. The trunk of the tree had gnarled looking bark. Anyone know what this tree is?

    not a dark wood, no thorns. flowers look like they’re going to be white. buds on ends of branches are bright red/pink. could it be a wild black cherry?
